Everyone is warmly invited to attend the annual Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies public lecture, which will be on Monday 19 May 2014 at 7pm in the Auditorium at Leeds Trinity University, West Yorkshire.  It will be delivered by our fourth visiting professor, Regenia Gagnier (Professor of English at the University of Exeter) on the topic “The Global Circulation of Victorian Actants and Ideas: in the Niche of Nature, Culture and Technology”. The lecture will be preceded by a wine reception at 6pm in the Conference Suite to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies.

Professor Gagnier is a distinguished scholar in the field of Victorian Studies and an outstanding critical thinker, whose work has contributed substantially to our understanding of the modern human condition. She has published numerous books on Victorian literature and culture, including Idylls of the Marketplace: Oscar Wilde and the Victorian Public (Stanford, 1986), Subjectivities: A History of Self-Representation in Britain 1832-1920 (Oxford, 1991), The Insatiability of Human Wants: Economics and Aesthetics in Market Society (Chicago, 2000) and Individualism, Decadence and Globalization: on the Relationship of Part to Whole 1859-1920 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010).

At noon on Thursday, July 11, the University of Delaware Library and the Delaware Art Museum will sponsor an informal discussion by Laura Kilbride of her research. She is the 2013 holder of the Fellowship in Pre-Raphaelite Studies, which is jointly funded by the University of Delaware Library and the Delaware Art Museum

A luncheon buffet will be provided by the Library. Acceptances are requested via email at libraryrsvp@winsor.lib.udel.edu . Although acceptances are strongly encouraged, walk-ins are welcome. This program is open to the public.

Laura Kilbride is in residence from mid-June through mid-July 2013 to use the resources of the Delaware Art Museum, the University of Delaware Library, and the Mark Samuels Lasner Collection. She is studying the relationship of the poet Algernon Charles Swinburne and the painter-poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti from their first meeting in 1857 through 1868, when Swinburne commented on his friend’s art in “Notes on Some Pictures of 1868.” A Ph.D. candidate at St. John’s College, University of Cambridge, UK, she is writing a dissertation on “Swinburne’s Style."

William Morris (1834-1896) gained fame as a designer, as a poet, as a socialist, as the founder of the arts and crafts movement, and as the maker of beautiful books at his Kelmscott Press, founded in 1891. In this illustrated conversation with National Gallery of Art curator Diane Waggoner, Mark Samuels Lasner explores Morris's lifelong, multifaceted engagement with print--as a reader, author, collector, calligrapher,  typographer, printer, and publisher--which culminated with the publication of the great Kelmscott Chaucer just before his death.  Samuels Lasner will also touch on his own collecting of Morris and his circle.

Jane Morris has traditionally been treated harshly by scholars writing on William Morris. When not the subject of outright attack, she has been dismissed as unintelligent, or unimportant. Frank Sharp will discuss his work with Jan Marsh on The Collected Letters of Jane Morris (Boydell Press, 2012) and how the wealth of new information provided by the letters reveals a politically engaged (though disenfranchised), culturally aware woman who was involved and assisted in most of William Morris's endeavors. Her ability to recreate herself given her childhood of dire poverty was accomplished through her own keen intelligence. Sharp will argue for a major reevaluation of Jane Morris in light of this new evidence.

Frank Sharp is an independent scholar who has written extensively on Morris and his circle.

Lecture: digitizing the Punch Contributor Ledgers (11/6/2012)

Colleagues are cordially invited to Liverpool John Moores on November 6th for the first Victorian Print and Popular Culture seminar of this academic year.

Meeting at the University Library, Aldham Roberts at 4pm there will be a meeting with Seth Cayley, Publisher for Cengage Learning, to discuss products in the Gale Catalogue and the imminent launch of their new digital project on The Daily Mail.  There will be a break for refreshments followed by a paper delivered by Dr Clare Horrocks on the Punch Contributor Ledgers. The talk will be centred on the first phase of her project to digitise the Punch Contributor Ledgers and will include the launch of the pilot site which has digitised 1843 - 1847 of the Ledgers as well as providing a site where teaching and learning resources for working with Victorian periodicals can be hosted.  The whole site will be free at the point of access, meaning that scholars of Punch and Victorian authors like Jerrold and Thackeray can for the first time easily identify the full extent of the material they actually contributed to Punch.  The second phase of the site through to 1855 is due for release in 2013.
