Papers are sought for a session co-sponsored by the William Morris Society and the Old Norse Discussion Group on any aspect of William Morris and his associates in relation to Old Norse topics: literary, linguistic, artistic, biographical or political, ranging from pre-historic origins to the present day. Please send abstracts and C.V. by March 15, 2014 to bryane@mst.edu and florence-boos@uiowa.edu.

2. "The Pre-Raphaelites: The Ecological and the Oceanic" The William Morris Society will also sponsor a panel on "The Pre-Raphaelites: The Ecological and the Oceanic."  For this we seek papers on the Pre-Raphaelites, Morris and ecological concerns, the environment, ‘green’ politics, and/or oceanic journeys, Morris’s influence in Asia and Oceania, or trans-Pacific approaches to Pre-Raphaelite studies. The Joseph R. Dunlap Memorial Fellowship awarded by the William Morris Society in the United States supports scholarly and creative work about William Morris and may be granted for research and other expenses, including travel to conferences and libraries. Projects may deal with any subject—biographical, literary, historical, social, artistic, political, typographical—relating to Morris. The Society also encourages translations of Morris's works and the production of teaching materials (lesson plans and course materials) suitable for use at the elementary, secondary, college or adult-education level. Applications are sought particularly from younger members of the Society and from those at the beginning of their careers. Recipients may be from any country, need not have an academic or institutional appointment, and need not hold a Ph.D.

Applicants should send a two-page description of their project, along with a c.v. and at least one letter of recommendation. For a translation project, please submit an additional letter from a recognized authority able to certify the applicant's competence in both languages. For teaching materials, we ask also for a cover letter describing the ways in which the materials might be used in learning situations. The Society would be pleased to publish any completed translation or teaching materials on its website, but this is not a requirement.

The deadline for applications is December 15, 2013. Applications are judged by committee, and the decision announced by January 15, 2014. Send applications to:

The William Morris Society of Canada invites proposals for 20-minute papers to be presented at a 2014 symposium on Morris and History. Considerations of Morris's interest in history and of historical influences and connections implicit within one or more aspects of his work are welcome. Papers may explore these themes in relation to his many artistic and literary endeavours, to development of his political thinking and also to changes in his ideas about history itself.

G. F. Watts, OM, RA and Mary Seton Watts were bright lights in Victorian art and the Arts and Crafts movement. These two creative artists left a great legacy in Compton, Surrey--a splendid Ernest George house and studios, an ornate cemetery chapel (considered by many to be a fin-de-siecle masterpiece), a pottery which was a center for social enterprise, and the remarkable Watts Gallery, the only purpose-built art gallery for a single professional artist as well as a hostel for apprentice ceramicists. The Watts Gallery has just been restored and re-opened by HRH The Prince of Wales to universal acclaim.

Richard Ormond CBE, Chairman of the Watts Gallery Trust, and Perdita Hunt, the Gallery Director, who together have led the restoration and the renaissance of this artists' village and national museum, will describe the founders’ lives, ethos, and vision, and how this translates into the 21st century and beyond.
